The six Gulf countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE) established the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) and its College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS) in 1980. The AGU has a long and established history of collaborating with several United Nations agencies and the World Health Organization and particularly its Eastern Mediterranean Regional office. The CMMS has taken several initiatives and established networks and collaborations in the Gulf regions as well as internationally in the field of Evidence-Based Health Care and Medical Education.

International organizations such as the Cochrane Collaboration and the International Society of Technology Assessment in Health Care have provided a thrust to evidence-based approaches in health care, while parallel organizations like the Best Evidence Medical Education group have started work in the area of medical education with similar objectives.

The AGU has recognized the relationship between evidence-based medical education and evidence-based health care and has been a pioneer in the region in both fields. Recognizing the need for more research and to provide further impetus to the efforts in the two areas, the university established a Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care and Medical Education.

The Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care and Medical Education is dedicated to the promotion of evidence-based approaches in health care and medical education in the Eastern Mediterranean Region through education, research and provision of consultative and technical expertise.
