Appointment of Dr. Ben Salah as Chairman of Family & Community Medicine Department at AGU’s College of Medicine

Dr. Khalid Abdul Rahman Al-Ohaly, President of the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), issued a decree appointing Dr. Afif Ben Salah, Professor of Family and Community Medicine, as Chairman of the Family and Community Medicine Department at AGU’s College of Medicine and Medical Sciences.  Dr. Ben Salah expressed his deep gratitude to the President for his continuous support of the University’s faculty, especially in providing a nurturing academic environment that encourages scientific research. He said: "At AGU, we aim to be an excellent academic and research centre that addresses the concerns of GCC countries. Thus, the university prioritises research that develops solutions to health problems facing Gulf citizens."
Dr. Salah received a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Oxford University in 1999, a Master in the same specialisation from the Royal College of London in 1993, a Master in Community Medicine from Montreal University in Canada in 1987, and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1985 from the University of Tunis. He was Professor of Community Medicine and Epidemiology at the College of Medicine at Tunis University and Head of the Department of Medical Epidemiology at Institut Pasteur de Tunis from 2006 to 2016.  He served as Director of the Primary Health Care Department of the Ministry of Health in Tunisia in 2013. He also served as Director of the Centre for Research in Tropical Diseases, associated with the American Institute of Health (US-NIH) at Institut Pasteur de Tunis between 2007 and 2012. He was also Director of the Regional Training Centre associated with World Health Organisation (WHO) in 2015.
Dr. Afif has over 25 years of experience in the fields of epidemiology, public health, primary health care, maternal and child health, international health regulations and clinical research. He is funded by the World Bank and WHO for his epidemiological research. He is an expert member of WHO’s Research Funding Committee on Tropical Diseases for the Mediterranean region since 2003. He is member of the Neglected Diseases Advisory Committee (DNDI) in Geneva since 2006, member of WHO’s Expert Committee on the Control of Leishmaniasis disease, in addition to his membership in the WHO Expert Committee on Control of Influenza and Acute Respiratory Diseases since 2014.
Additionally, he has published over 50 scientific articles in international scientific journals and supervised over 20 students at different levels of graduate studies in various biomedical fields.
