14 Candidates Win Student Council Elections at AGU’s College of Medicine

Student Council Elections of the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) for the academic year 2017/2018 resulted in the victory of 14 male and female students with 7 seats each. The election regulations stipulate that each academic year, one male and female student shall be elected as representatives of every batch of study.
24 students from the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences representing the GCC countries competed in this year's elections. Representing the students of the preparatory year, Hawas Salman Al-Shammari won by acclamation while his colleague Othoub Salama Al-Balawi won by 30 votes.
The first year student winners were Abdulaziz Hamad Al-Mikhyal and his colleague Heba Al-Bashir by acclamation. Representing year two are students Saifaddin Al-Jowder with 77 votes and his colleague Fatima Saleh Al-Kandari. For third year students, Nawaf Mohsen Al-Mutairi won by 112 votes and his colleague Taif Jumaa Al-Amriya won by 116 votes. The results of the fourth year election yielded Omar Redha Al-Saeed with 73 votes and Amal Mohsen Al-Maghrabi with 80 votes.
In the same context, 101 students voted for student Walid Khalid Al-Masoud in the fifth year, while three female students competed for the seat won by Khawla Suwaidan Al-Badi with 80 votes. Omar Ahmed Zainal was elected sixth year representative by acclamation, while Reham Fathi Abdulrahman won by 71 votes.
The sixth year saw the most participation, with a voting rate of 83% of the students in the batch. The Deanship of Student Affairs declared this year’s election the most interactive since the establishment of the Student Council at the AGU, with a total participation of 72% voters across all batches.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Abdulrahman Yousif, congratulated the winners of the elections, affirming that this electoral experience shapes students' personalities and enable them to present their opinions and ideas in an honestly competitive democratic environment. The Student Council, which includes representatives from GCC countries, also plays a prominent role in honing the leadership skills, advancing the cognitive and social potential of medical students.
Social Supervisor and Head of the Election Committee Ahmed Al-Sai said that students competed amid a friendly atmosphere and praised the cooperation of all candidates in complying with the administrative regulations for the elections, which went smoothly according to plans and regulations.
The first Student Council Meeting of the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences was held in the presence of the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Abdulrahman Yousif, and the Social Supervisor, Mr Ahmad Al-Sai, where the objectives of the council and its work mechanisms were presented.
The positions were then distributed with Omar Zainal as President of the Student Council, and Reham Fathi as Vice President, while Nawal Al-Mutairi was chosen as Secretary. Walid Al-Masoud is in charge of Clinical Years, Amal Al-Maghraby of Pre-clinical Years. Abdulaziz Al-Mikyal became in charge of Activities, with Fatima Al-Kandari as his First Deputy and Hawas Al-Shammari as Second Deputy. Saifaddin Al-Jowder is in charge of Services, Othoub Balawi his Deputy. Omar Redha handles Foreign Affairs, Taif Al-Amriya Media. Students Khawla Al-Badi and Heba Al-Bishr are members of the Student Council.
