The President of AGU, Dr Khalid bin Abdulrahman Al-Ohaly, will sponsor the first Conference and Workshop in Biomedical Computer Simulation at 9 am on Thursday 16 November 2017 at the University's headquarters in Manama. Researchers and specialists from various countries will participate to review the latest methods of using computers to simulate bioscience and medicine.

Member of the Organising Committee, Vice President of AGU and Dean of the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Dr Khaled Saeed Tabbara, said that computer simulation is the process of entering data into a computer to generate a model of an organ of the human body, which allows researchers to examine it in depth. The simulation aims to study the interaction of different human body organs with the changes and drugs that we enter into it, so that we can conduct experiments without the need for human or animal lab testing.

Computer simulation provides scientists, researchers and students with an opportunity to conduct in-depth research and test their results in many fields such as medicine, biological and cellular sciences. Researchers design models for different organs and subject them to virtual mathematical processes to measure their results. Dr Tabbara explained that these techniques are very useful in advanced sciences such as complex genetic testing, and testing of neurological mechanisms in different conditions. Simulations are also used in other areas such as predicting environmental phenomena and natural disasters.

The Conference aims to provide medical professionals and the scientific community with the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas, in order to find the best applications of computer simulation in the research of scientific treatments for many intractable diseases. The meeting will include presentations by prominent leaders and lecturers in their respective fields of specialisation, in addition to a wide range of student research that discusses the various applications of medical computer simulation.

The key conference papers will be presented by leading global speakers in the field. Radiology Professor Michael Vannier will present a paper on medical imaging and methods of displaying and processing images. Another key lecturer is Dr Christian Cyron, Visiting Professor at several international universities, and Head of the Emmy Noether Group for Vascular Growth and Remodelling in Aneurysms, at Munich Technical University.

Dr Ziad Tariq Alnaib, Professor of Surgery and Urology at the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences at AGU and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgery, Glasgow, UK, will present a paper on the biomechanics of reconstruction of the human urinary bladder.  The workshops will offer practical applications for students and graduates in biosciences, medicine, biomedical engineering, biophysics, applied mathematics, physiology and computer science, who are particularly interested in the process of creating intricate and dynamic computer-generated models.

It is noted that the conference is supported by Al Baraka Banking Group and Tamkeen.
