The United Nations Educational Centre for Water Resources Management in the Arab Region at the College of Graduate Studies of the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has graduated a new batch of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) students, after 16 Gulf and Arab students working in the field of water in the Arab region passed the final package exam.
Coordinator of the Programme and Professor of Water Resources at the College of Graduate Studies, Dr Waleed Zubari, said that the programme implemented by AGU in collaboration with the United Nations University - Institute for Water Environment and Health in Canada is a multi-disciplinary programme in the development, management and planning of water resources.
“The programmes aims to build the capabilities of workers in the field of IWRM and contribute to the development of integrated management thinking regarding various aspects of water resources and its related issues in the Arab region,” Dr Zubari said.
He further added:  "For attaining the IWRM Diploma, students come up with projects of practical applications that translate the principles of IWRM into solving water problems in their respective countries."
He pointed out that many programme participants received grants from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, which has supported the programme since its inception. The training programme includes ten packages of training materials implemented successively over the span of one year.
“The first and tenth packages and the midterm test are taught at AGU, while the second to the ninth packages are taught via distance learning,” he pointed out.
The qualification for the UN Diploma in IWRM requires the preparation of a graduation project on a real IWRM case, to be presented at the end of the programme in the tenth package, besides sitting the final comprehensive examination. A minimum of 70% is required to obtain the diploma.
Graduates with 80% or more can directly enrol in the Water Resources Master’s Programme offered by the College of Graduate Studies after fulfilling the general requirements for admission to the University. The diploma programme is taught by a selection of AGU professors specialised in Water Resources, Environmental, Social and Economic Sciences who also supervise the graduation projects
