AGU’s Academic Presents Results of First Project to Standardise Autism Disorder Rating Scale in GCC

In a recent international conference held in Bali, Indonesia, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Intellectual Disability and Autism Programme at the College of Graduate Studies of the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), Dr Saad Al-Khamisi, published the third edition of the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale, recently translated by AGU, discussing the extent to which the GCC environment is adapted to the scale.

"The importance of this release stems from the urgent need for a global tool that keeps up the pace with the recent changes in diagnosis of this disorder and at the same time suitable for the GCC countries," said Dr Al-Khamisi, who was the person in charge of the translation and standardisation project of the scale.

“This tool doesn’t give us precise diagnosis to autism. Having said that however, it tells us  the severity of the disorder symptoms, and it identifies the high and low functioning. It’s applicable to children who are atheistic speakers and non-speakers,” he added.

Dr Al-Khamisi pointed out that the project was approved by the AGU's research committee last year and was completed with permission to translate from the publisher.

“The scientific conditions of the scale were verified and applied in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates and Oman. The preliminary results of the project were presented at an international conference in Bali, Indonesia last January,” he explained, stating: “Autism spectrum disorder is one of the disorders that has provoked many studies and researches in the past decade, given the interference of this disorder with many other developmental disorders. The diagnosis of the disorder went through several stages until it had stabilised in the fifth and final version of the American Psychiatric Association's Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders.

“The implementation process is expected to be completed in the GCC countries, in preparation for standardisation and the development of an electronic image of the scale, which will allow detection of the intensity of autism immediately after the data is entered directly. The specialists will be trained in the Gulf countries to use the standard in paper and electronic form.”
