“Innovation Forum” and “Days of Technology” Conclude at AGU

The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) concluded the events of the Innovation Forum, which was launched under the title "Innovation for Social and Economic Development in the Arabian Gulf" with wide participation of experts and specialists in innovation issues from around the world. The Days of Technology Exhibition, which attracted a large number of researchers, students and interested individuals similarly concluded.
While chairing the first session entitled “Innovation as an Engine for Social Development”, Head of Innovation and Technology Management at AGU, Dr Odeh Al-Jayyousi said, “The keynote speakers stressed the importance of social innovation to solve the basic problems of individuals with special needs. They touched upon the role of patents and the establishment of centres to transfer technologies from universities to industries in Gulf countries. They also highlighted the role of scientific research centres such as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), human capital in development and the role of investment in education, seeking opportunities to advance the economy and sustainable development."
“The relation of innovation to higher education is closely linked,” said Dr Waleed Zubari, Professor of Water Resources at AGU, calling for discussion of the appropriate higher education environment to encourage innovation. Meanwhile the speakers offered rich experiences in a number of leading universities such as the American University of Mississippi, the British University of Oxford, the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, besides the Quality Assurance Authority for Education and Training in Bahrain.
During his session entitled “Innovation in Business Management and eGovernment”, Professor Saud Al-Mahameed said, "The sessions reviewed the best innovation practices in different countries, including Germany, USA and Brazil, and the possibility of applying these experiences in Bahrain and the Gulf as a whole. Challenges and difficulties faced by this region were discussed, and how to overcome them.”
The forum concluded its final session with a seminar entitled “Health Education and Development" moderated by Dr Salman Al-Zayani, Assistant Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine, AGU, with participation from the American universities of North Dakota and Minnesota.
The Days of Technology Exhibition attracted a large number of interested individuals. It showcased the results of years of scientific research and technological developments undertaken by the College of Graduate Studies, presenting applications and technical products developed or assimilated by AGU in accordance with the vision and mission of the university and its strategic objectives of transforming into an innovative university to help bridge the technological gap in the GCC region.
The exhibition included a number of technologies in the areas of Biotechnology - Medical, Agricultural and Environmental applications, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Geoinformatics and Technology Management and Innovation. Various university faculty and researchers showcased the techniques and technologies made by the college in the field of data analysis in the medical sector, 3D design of genetic proteins and their presentation tools, the development of biological drugs for cancers and infections, plant tissue culture, development of crude oil, plant DNA barcodes, monitoring and analysis of plant biological activity, red weevil control for date palm protection, water management software, techniques for marine environment quality measurement, and advanced farming techniques in greenhouses.
