The College of Graduate Studies at Arabian Gulf University (AGU) organised a training workshop on Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System “LEAP” in order to understand the fundamentals of energy supply and demand and to build participants’ skills in energy production and consumption modelling, as well as to evaluate various alternatives to reduce emissions from environmental and economic aspects.

Director of the Climate Change Project Dr Sabah Al-Jenaid said, “This training workshop is held within context of the “Preparation of the Third National Climate Change Report of the Kingdom of Bahrain for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" project which is funded by the Global Environment Facility and implemented by the UNEP Regional Office for West Asia in coordination with the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE), in cooperation with AGU.”

The third component of the project pertains to "Assessment of Mitigation Options" and aims to assess the available options to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the Kingdom of Bahrain from an environmental and economic standpoint. A number of options will be considered to reduce emissions from a number of sectors.  International expert Dr Charles Heaps, LEAP Developer and Director of the Energy Modelling Program at the Stockholm Environment Institute lectured at the workshop, which was attended by members of the national climate change reporting teams of Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.

Coordinator of the workshop, Head of the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Assessment Team, Assistant Professor in the Environmental Management Programme at the Department of Natural Resources Dr Maha Al-Sabbagh, explained, “This workshop aims to build teams capacity in terms of understanding the energy system and how to model the production and consumption of energy to determine the feasibility of different options in reducing emissions. This allows the study of the environmental and economic feasibility of various options related to energy efficiency and renewable energy sources in various sectors, and the nature of the available data within multiple future scenarios.”
