The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) recently announced that Environmental Management Assistant Professor at the Natural Resources and Environment Department in the university Dr. Maha Al Sabbagh won the second position of the 36th edition of Rashid Bin Humaid Award for Culture and Sciences, held in Ajman in the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Al Sabbagh won in the environmental sciences research category for the year 2019, and she was the only Bahrini who participated in this category.
The award aims to promote research and creativity in the region, and diversify its fields to include various scientific research in the fields of engineering, health, medicine, nutrition, environmental sciences and information technology, that is in addition to human studies, which include forensic, legal, educational, psychological, social, administrative and critical studies. As for literary creativity, it consists of eloquent poetry, folk poetry, short story, novel and children's literature.
The number of participants in the award was around 270 participants and it was judged by 145 juries, who consisted of academics and writers researchers in various specialisations of science and culture.
In her study, Dr. Al Sabbagh addressed linking water and energy in the Kingdom of Bahrain from the perspective of adaptation and mitigation. The study aimed to evaluate a range of options related to the management of municipal water and electric power, given the close correlation between water and energy in GCC countries through the establishment of two dynamic models using the Water Evaluation And Planning (WEAP) system and the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning (LEAP) system in the next decade (from 2020 to 2030).
Dr. Al Sabbagh mentioned that raising awareness among consumers, utilising water conservation tools and reducing the percentage non-profit water would collectively result in a 29% reduction in water demand, a reduction in overall demand for electricity and primary energy, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions by around 1.8%. Dr. Al Sabbagh added that when renewable energies are used, the carbon footprint of the municipal water sector drops from 1.25 to 1.13 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by the year 2030.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Al Sabbagh has been awarded a PhD degree in Environment from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, and she has several research papers that are published in various international publications in the fields of energy and climate change.
