PHASE III – CLERKSHIP PHASE (YEARS 5 & 6)

In this final phase of the undergraduate curriculum, students undergo supervised clinical training in hospitals and health centres. Students rotate for 2 academic years in the following departments: Surgery (10 weeks), Internal Medicine (10 weeks), Pediatrics (10 weeks), Obstetrics/ Gynecology (10 weeks), Family Medicine (8 weeks), Psychiatry (4 weeks), Ophthalmology (2 weeks), Orthopedics (2 weeks), Ear, Nose & Throat ‘ENT’ (2 weeks), Anesthesia (2 weeks), Accident & Emergency (2 weeks), Neurology (2 weeks), Radiology (2 weeks), Urology (2 weeks) and Dermatology (2 weeks).

Objectives of the Programme :

The main objective of the programme is to prepare students to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to identify, analyse and manage common health problems in the primary, secondary and tertiary care levels. 

Methods of Teaching :

      • Bedside teaching
      • Clinical problem solving sessions
      • Outpatient clinics
      • Clinical teaching in the theatre
      • Teaching rounds and departmental seminars.

N.B:      Each student is assigned (twice a week) duties in the labour & admission rooms between 5 to 10 PM. On weekends and holidays, students are expected to come if they are ‘On Call’

An example of a weekly timetable of Clerkship rotations in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Other rotations may have specific differences according to the nature of the specialty.
