The Vision

Technology is re-shaping our world at a speed unimaginable just a few decades ago. It is the main engine and prime mover of economies, constitutes the competitive advantage of one society over another and is the central point at issue between developed and newly industrialized countries. Technology could be defined as “a set of knowledge, experiences, skills, processes, tools, methods and systems employed in the creation of goods and/or providing services that satisfy certain needs of the society in a particular socio-economic system“. One aspect that is being brought to the fore is the compelling need for technologically informed management. Management of technology is a unique combination of many constituent elements and emphasises the multi-disciplinary nature of the field. It links engineering, science and management disciplines to plan, develop, and implement technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of organisations and nations.

Socio-economic progress in many developing countries, notably the Arabian Gulf countries, relies heavily on imported technology, mainly in its embodied form, such as machinery, equipment, products and services. There is an urgent need therefore to improve indigenous capabilities in the fields of technology innovation and production. More pressing, however, is the need for skilled performance in the processes of planning, searching, evaluation, selection, negotiation, contracting, implementation and operation of technology projects. In order to achieve these processes effectively and efficiently, the latest, most modern methods, techniques and tools must be taught and applied. The objectives of the Technology Management Programme at the Arabian Gulf University are: to cultivate firstly, an appreciation of the aforementioned needs, and secondly, an understanding of the methodology required to meet such needs.

This Programme has been running for over twenty years. It is one of the first in the world, and the only one in the Arabian Gulf area. It differs from similar programmes in the industrialised world by specifically addressing the current and projected future technology needs of developing countries, more particularly the Gulf countries. The Programme is designed to offer postgraduate studies in technology management leading to a Diploma and M.Sc. degree. Plans are currently in progress for students to undertake research leading to a Ph.D. degree. In addition, the Programme offers community services to practitioners in the field, in the form of consultation, training courses and seminars in the different areas of technology management.
