Program Objectives, Scope and Features

The Gulf Region

The Arabian Gulf region is witnessing marked growth in the production and service sectors and a shift from the dominance of public sector enterprises to more involvement of the private sector. This emphasizes the changes in the role of the state in technological development in the Region at large. The TMP is aware of the needs of those joining it from the Region and their educational backgrounds and past experiences. The TMP is particularly aware of the fact that societal needs in the field of technology in the Gulf area are continuously changing with the evolution of national development plans, and the way in which technology itself develops.

Objectives

The main objective of the program is to develop the capabilities of candidates who join the program in carrying out the operations involved in harnessing technological inputs to the needs of society efficiently and effectively. This includes planning, developing, and implementing technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of an organization or a nation.

Scope

The notion of Technology Management is evolving all the time. One description states that: “Management of technology links engineering, science and management disciplines to plan, develop, and implement technological capabilities to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of an organization or a nation”. This description characterizes Technology Management as a unique combination of many constituent elements and emphasizes the multi-disciplinary nature of the field.

Given the multi-disciplinary roots of Technology Management and its different academic settings, a pliable format is needed. Such a format would have to meet three requirements. It has to be: (i) Focused enough to emphasize the unique features of technology; (ii) Broad enough to encompass the entire scope of the Management of Technology and (iii) Flexible enough to allow for creative diversity and the special competencies of host organizations. In keeping with these requirements the program is made up of four categories.

  1. Technology-centered subjects
  2. Technology related management procedures
  3. Corporate functions
  4. Supporting disciplines

In addition to the four categories, there are special assignments and projects in each category. Research work is included to bring the program in line with Master’s degree research requirements.

Features

The curriculum of TMP/AGU addresses the stages of the technology management process methodically, introducing the various tools and techniques that lead to success. Since most students in the full-time stream are young and at early stages in their career development, emphasis of the study is mainly on the enterprise, rather than the national, level. Delivery systems encourage continuous self-learning, clear and critical thinking and interaction with real life situations in business enterprises in the region.

The study is well balanced and flexible, including core and specialized courses, as well as guided research. The program is enhanced by the spiritual endowment given by the syllabus on the Islamic heritage as related to the value of scientific discovery. Classes are characterized by an emphasis on interactive learning, through the use of case studies and student presentations.
