The Effect of percentage of Items with Differential Functioning and Sample Size on SIBTEST Power and Effectiveness

Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the effect of Percentage of Items with Differential Functioning and Sample Size on the Test power using Simultaneous Item Bias Test (SIBTEST) to detect Differential item Functioning (DIF) according to Three Parameter Logarithmic Model. The sample of the study consisted of individuals who have ability level distributed normally with a mean equals Zero and standard deviation equals one. The study adopted the experimental approach which controls the generated variables, and used WINGEN-3 to generate tests according to the required specifications and SIBTEST to calculate (ß) value.
To achieve the objectives of the study, the data of three tests consist of 50 items for each, (5, 10, 15) DIF items ratio, and (1200, 800, 400) sample size levels were analyzed. The study used Test Power as a scale to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of SIBTEST to detect DIF. The Results revealed that the Test Power increases with the increase of DIF item ratio, as the SIBTEST is much powerful and effective when the DIF item ratio is (30%, 20%) of the total Test Items. Also the results showed that the SIBTEST becomes much powerful and effective with the increase of Sample Size.
