Molecular medicine can be defined as the branch of biomedical science that studies, diagnoses and treats pathological conditions at the molecular level. This branch is readily evolving, encompassing emerging fields such as medical genetics, pathology, clinical diagnostics and companion diagnostics, nanomedicine, and immunology.
Technological advances in molecular biology and biomarker discovery and assessment have revolutionized the practice of clinical medicine over the past decade. To name a few, cancer immunotherapy, pathology, nanomedicine, gene therapy of inherited diseases, next-generation sequencing, and the engineering of biologic therapies. Increasingly, research scientists, medical professionals and biomedical researchers in the health and life sciences must understand and evaluate advances in molecular medicine to keep abreast of developments in their fields and capably exploit this knowledge, emerging evidence, global challenges, and training in areas related to immunology, nanomedicine, and genetics.
The purpose of the Master of Science in Molecular Medicine program is to develop knowledge and skills in cellular and molecular biology, molecular diagnostics, and molecular mechanisms of disease.
Graduates can implement their acquired skills and knowledge in both research and practical clinical work and will contribute to an increased understanding of pathological processes, diagnostics, biomarker discovery, molecular mechanisms, and treatment of diseases.
The College of Medicine and Medical Sciences (CMMS), Arabian Gulf University (AGU), while consolidating its undergraduate innovative educational programs, initiated postgraduate programs offering Ph.D. degree in molecular medicine in 2006. The current program, among other purposes, prepares and trains students who wish to enroll in the Ph.D. degree in molecular medicine.
This program has a strong focus on research providing a research-led teaching experience and is suitable for students with a background in biomedicine and molecular biology. The courses are designed to appeal to both clinical and basic biomedical scientists and provide comprehensive theoretical and practical training using state-of-the-art techniques in molecular and cellular biology as applied to medicine. Recent advances in technology and methodologies have resulted in the introduction of many new laboratory diagnostic procedures. The gradual incorporation of these methodologies in the working environment has necessitated that all diagnostic laboratory workers acquire the necessary knowledge and practical competencies to reliably evaluate, perform, and interpret the results of these tests. This is particularly relevant as most diagnostic procedures have become automated and depend on commercially available kits, with new technologies replacing older ones at an increasing pace.
The Master of Science in Laboratory Medicine (MLM) program focuses on diseases representing a health burden in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and addresses specific disorders (genetic, neoplastic, infectious, immunologic and nutritional) which are of current concern. The program seeks to foster interdisciplinary and interprofessional understanding and action. This two-year program leads to a Master of Science degree.
Master's Degree

Higher Diploma Degree
The diploma in clinical research is offered at the Clinical Research Center at the Arabian Gulf University. The program aims at building capacity in clinical research in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to help support the design, execution and management of clinical research projects and trials in GCC hospitals and medical research centers.
The diploma program is suitable for graduates in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, life sciences, ethics committee members, regulatory affairs members and other allied disciplines involved in clinical research projects and trials. The diploma provides skills for a career in the diverse and complex field of clinical research management. The one-year Academic Diploma in clinical research provides clinicians-investigators, research nurses, regulatory authorities, members of research ethics committees, and other clinical research professionals a strong foundation in the methods, ethical conduct, coordination, scientific standards, laws and regulations, as well as the operations and management of a clinical research study. It also focuses on the science of pharmaceutical and medical devices development, stem cells and biotechnology products, as well as medical technologies intended for human use.
The curriculum of the diploma program in clinical research is inspired by a core competencies framework developed by the Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency, led by a team from Harvard University’s Mutli-center Clinical Research Center. The framework comprises eight competency domains of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function within the field of clinical research.
