Professional Diploma in Waste Management
​​​​ ​The Center for Community Services, Consultancies, Training and Continuing Education is proud to announce that it will offer the Professional Diploma for Waste Management in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment at AGU.

Aim of the Course ​
This course aims to build the capacities in the​ field of solid wastes management, through providing a holistic course with information and knowledge that enable the participants to contribute positively in their careers, institutions, and countries via improving their skills, which therefore contribute towards the realization of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of 2030.

Course Description
Waste management is considered one of the most important challenges in urban cities worldwide. Thus, understanding environmental pollution and waste management became essential. 
This course provides information and principles of waste management technologies and practices and pollution control. It emphasizes the sustainable and integrated solid waste management (ISWM) approach. This course provides all the required information and management practices and technologies of all solid waste categories including Municipal Solid Waste (MSW): (domestic, commercial, construction and demolition (C&D)), Industrial Waste (IW), Hazardous Waste (HW): (including Medical Waste (MW)). It provides state-of-the-art- technologies that support the sustainable management of solid waste, which contribute to the realization of the SDGs 2030. Moreover, this course will provide substantial information about the Circular Economy as the economy of the future, and discuss the opportunities of investments as a holistic approach of waste management. This course enables the participants to integrate the gained knowledge into their areas of expertise.

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes
The primary objective of this course is to provide the participants with general knowledge about waste management and environmental pollution and related aspects. It is designed to cover the fundamental knowledge and principles to manage waste sustainably to conserve natural resources. Management practices include planning and decisions making to prevent and/or minimize pollution and therefore reduce the negative impacts on the environment, health, economy, and society. Moreover, this course will emphasize the role of the regulations, legislation and international agreements in pollution abatement.
After completion of this course, the participants are expected to:

  • Understand the principles of environmental pollution. 
  • Define and characterize solid, liquid, and gas pollutants from technical and regulatory perspectives.
  • Identify the waste management practices and technologies based on Waste Management Hierarchy and 4Rs principle, including waste prevention and reduction, reuse, recycle, recovery, and disposal, besides the waste stream processes including waste collection, processing technologies, separation, transport, and storage.
  • Develop working knowledge of technologies and international best practices in areas of solid waste management.
  • Identify the major health, social and ecological impacts of environmental pollution in the absence of -or inappropriate- waste management.
  • Gain the skills and abilities to select the optimum and best solution for any environmental pollution and waste management issue. 
  • Understand the integrated solid waste management to sustainability.
  • Gain the ability to evaluate and determine the waste-related environmental problems and contribute to choosing the most suitable solution to any waste problem.
  • Improve the abilities to determine the real-world environmental situations and distribute awareness from a new perspective.
  • Gain the ability to think critically and evaluate practical environmental pollution cases.
  • Recognize the role and importance of strategies, policies, regulations, and legislations in waste management.
  • Consider Waste as a treasure, resource, and raw material for many manufacturing activities, and accordingly explore the opportunities for Circular Economy investments in our country.

Entry Requirements
  • Applicant must hold a minimum secondary school certificate or its equivalent
  • Applicant must have the Knowledge of English language 
  • Applicant must have the experience in the environmental and waste management fields

Evaluation and Assessment:

Students' evaluation will be based on:

  • Class Participation & Attendance                 10%
  • Modules Tests                                                  40%
  • Assignment 1                                                    20%
  • Final Project                                                      30%

Outcome / Qualification
A “Professional Diploma in Waste Management Certificate” will be provided to the participant on course completion.

Course Content: Modules Topics

This course consists of 12 modules; 9 are general and 3 are specialized courses in the following fields (Medical, Industrial & Municipal)

  • Each module is of three credit hours 
  • Each participant should fulfil 12 modules in total (36 credit hours) => (120 working hours)
  • Each Module duration is 2 weeks (6 working hours/week) => (12 working hours/module)
  • The participants are required to submit a final project in the last month of study, in one of the above module’s topics as per their interests.
  • The Certificate will be awarded after completion of all the 12 modules successfully AND submitting the final project which can be of any topic of the modules listed above upon the participant’s selection.

  • Number of lectures per module:  4 lectures, two lectures a week
  • Lecture duration:                            3 hours 
  • Lecture starts from                         3:00pm and ends at 6:00pm Bahrain time (evening)
