In support of the National Initiative Agricultural Development’s Efforts: AGU Concludes Workshop Series for 138 Teachers to Asses Carbon Isolation

The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has recently concluded a series of workshops that aimed to train teachers in the Ministry of Education from 138 elementary, intermediate and secondary schools on collecting data about the primary trees planted in the public schools of Bahrain.

This initiative is part of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD), which adopted 18 types of trees to estimate and assess their carbon isolation and accumulation for climate action purposes.

The workshops were delivered by Dr Sabah Al Jenaid, Professor of Geographic Information Systems and Environment in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment at the College of Graduate Studies (CGS), and Ms Ghadeer Mohamed Redha Kadhem, Senior Geographic Information Systems Technician in the Natural Resources and Environment Department, as part of the agreement signed with NIAD.

The training courses lasted a total of 36 continuous hours, during which male and female teachers collected data on the primary trees and measured the amount of isolated carbon in AGU's garden.

In addition to the training workshops, the teachers also visited public schools to oversee fieldwork, where satellite imagery was used to survey the trees in the schools and data tables were prepared in advance.

On this occasion, Dr Al Jenaid expressed the university's commitment to supporting NIAD in its efforts to assess the potential increase of urban trees and shrubs as a strategy to mitigate climate change, preserve ecological systems and achieve Bahrain's environmental goals by carbon removal, in implementation of the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the Cabinet's approval in February 2022 of the national afforestation plan and doubling the current number of trees from 1.8 million trees to approximately 3.6 million trees by the year 2035.​
