{"id":13889,"date":"2026-09-29T14:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T11:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/?p=13889"},"modified":"2026-09-29T14:43:31","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T11:43:31","slug":"arabian-gulf-universitys-environmental-management-program-launches-an-awareness-campaign-to-reduce-food-loss-and-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/en\/arabian-gulf-universitys-environmental-management-program-launches-an-awareness-campaign-to-reduce-food-loss-and-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Arabian Gulf University\u2019s Environmental Management Program Launches an Awareness Campaign to Reduce Food Loss and Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Environmental Management Program at the Center for Environmental and Biological Studies, College of Education, Administrative and Technical Sciences, at Arabian Gulf University\u2014represented by students enrolled in the \u201cLaboratories, Field Studies, and Case Studies\u201d course\u2014launched an awareness initiative on campus to celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, which was launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), under the supervision of Dr. Sumaya Yousif, Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering and the Kingdom of Bahrain\u2019s representative in the regional working groups on food loss and waste for West Asian countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The initiative coincides with the seventh edition of the International Day in 2026, held under the theme \u201cThe Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste,\u201d with the aim of raising awareness of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of this issue and encouraging students to adopt more sustainable practices in handling food.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"503\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS08073-1-1024x503.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13890 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS08073-1-980x482.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS08073-1-480x236.jpg 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/503;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The initiative included an interactive quiz designed to gauge students\u2019 awareness of food loss and waste and ways to reduce them. It was developed in collaboration with a master\u2019s student in Natural Resources and Environment, specializing in Environmental Management, Orad Al-Enezi. It featured a series of interactive questions on the concepts of food loss and waste, their causes, and ways to reduce them in daily life, along with incentive prizes that encouraged students to participate, engage, and gain practical knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr. Sumaya Yousif emphasized that reducing food loss and waste goes beyond simply decreasing the amount of food discarded; it also involves conserving natural resources, reducing emissions and environmental impacts, lowering production costs, enhancing food security and nutrition, and supporting sustainable development goals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>She noted that the growing waste and depletion of resources associated with production and consumption require strengthening practices and policies that support the efficient use of resources, as well as developing integrated and sustainable strategies for waste management and recovery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>She added that raising awareness among young people and university students is a key gateway to bringing about sustainable change in daily behavior, noting that using the university environment as a platform for learning, awareness, and engagement\u2014through interactive methods that combine knowledge and participation\u2014 enables students to transition from being recipients of knowledge to becoming initiators and change-makers, transforming academic concepts into practical solutions and practices that can be applied both on and off campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"599\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS07977-1-1024x599.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13892 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS07977-1-980x573.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.agu.edu.bh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/AGS07977-1-480x281.jpg 480w\" data-sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/599;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>She emphasized that reducing food loss and waste also helps alleviate pressure on natural resources and emissions, enhances food security and nutrition, and supports productivity and economic growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dr. Sumaya Youssef explained that global indicators reflect the scale of the challenge, approximately 13.2% of food is lost globally in the post-harvest stages of the supply chain before it reaches retail outlets, while another 19% is wasted at the retail, food service, and household levels, equivalent to approximately 1.05 billion metric tons annually, according to 2022 data from the United Nations Environment Program. Meanwhile, households account for about 60% of total food waste, compared to 28% for food service and 12% for the retail sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Food loss and waste also account for approximately 8\u201310% of global greenhouse gas emissions, making its reduction a food, economic, and environmental necessity, as well as an important step toward protecting natural resources, supporting climate action, and achieving more sustainable food systems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For her part, student Orad Al-Enezi expressed her pride in participating in the preparation and implementation of the initiative, emphasizing that involving students in such events allows them to transform the academic knowledge they gain in the field of environmental management into practical initiatives that help raise awareness and promote sustainable behaviors within the university community.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This initiative is part of Arabian Gulf University\u2019s efforts to instill sustainability and transform academic knowledge into impactful community practices and is in line with its strategy and priorities in health, the environment, and sustainability.
