AGU’s MSSC provides training for inter-professional teams of medical students, caregivers, and clinical staff allowing them to explore, analyze and synthesize their actions to improve performance in real-life situations.

About the center

The Board of Trustees at the Arabian Gulf University (AGU) approved the establishment of a medical skills & simulation center (MSSC) as a pillar of its medical education. As such, the center would foster the educational process as it has the flexibility to uphold and bolster the requirements of the medical curriculum for all study levels at the College of Medicine and Medical Science (CMMS) of AGU.

The MSSC has a fully dedicated medical director who coordinates the administrative aspects and various medical simulation activities. The director is further linked in the chain of command with the Dean of College of Medicine and Medical Science (CMMS) of the Arabian Gulf University.

Medical simulation

One of the most important steps in clinical curriculum development is the introduction of simulation based education (SBE) as a coherent and effective teaching and learning practice.

‘Simulation’ is a generic term that refers to an artificial representation of a real-world process to achieve educational goals through experiential learning, whilst remaining contextually appropriate and realistic. Medical simulation is a branch of simulation technology related to education and training in medical fields. It can involve simulated human patients or mannequins in a variety of simulated environment.

The Arabian Gulf University (AGU) in Bahrain won the prestigious ASPIRE Excellence Award in Medical Education in the Category of Medical Simulation. The award recognized AGU’s efforts in establishing highly developed, realistic, simulation-based learning environments.

The Medical Skills and Simulation Center ( MSSC ) in the Arabian Gulf University ( AGU ) is the 1st in the Kingdom to be accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH ) indicating High quality and standards of Medical simulation practice in the simulation center.

Our ITC ( International training center ) is been accredited by the AHA ( American Heart Association ) in 2020 to conduct training courses ( BLS / ACLS ) for the Health care professionals. The ITC running the ACLS / BLS training services on a daily basis the whole year and catering mainly the training of medical students as well as professionals outside AGU. Every year almost 600 professionals are been trained in BLS & ACLS courses.

Courses

In the medical skills and simulation center, we develop and conduct different simulation based courses and symposia for Interns, registrars and specialists in different specialties

Courses that are conducted in MSSC on Bi-Annual basis:

**Electrocardiogram course **
Clinical simulation course for Interns
Clinical emergencies Course.

Standardized Patient Program

Simulated patient (SP) or Standardized patient in OSCE exam are the persons who pretends as patient and portrays the character of patient during examination or history taking but since the SP may be the mother or relative of patient, the term (Actor Role Player) became more popular.

Facilities

Part-Task Trainers are provided for medical training of clinical examination and diagnostic procedures including both invasive and non-invasive clinical procedures. These may consist of procedure which may cause embarrassment including examinations per rectum and the breast.

Curriculum

We at MSSC routinely conduct the sessions for clinical years in all disciplines i.e. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics and Pediatrics. Two sessions for each discipline are conduct daily and are called cycle.

ACTIVITIES

An Example of Daily activities of Medical skills and simulation center are as follows:

- Medicine sessions: 8 sessions/day
- Obstetrics and gynecology sessions: 2 sessions/day
- Pediatrics sessions: 4 sessions/day
- Body Interact sessions : 4 sessions / day
- Surgery sessions: 10 sessions/ week
- Family Medicine : 2 sessions / week
- AHA ITC sessions: 2 BLS courses/day and One ACLS course/day

SPECIFIC TARGET GROUPS OF LEARNERS

Medical students in the clinical phase of the AGU are the primary targets identified to benefit from the MSSC. The pre-clinical phase students will acquire skill and knowledge from the use of the MSSC as well.

Medical interns and junior doctors in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf region who are preparing for Arab Board Certification would also greatly benefit. These individuals would thus enjoy and benefit from a richer, holistic learning experience.
