The idea of establishing the Arabian Gulf University was first proposed during the First Conference of the Ministers of Education of the Gulf States in Riyadh in 1975. Following a series of feasibility studies and ministerial discussions, the decision to establish the University was officially approved at the Fourth General Conference of the Ministers of Education, held in Bahrain in 1978. The Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States (ABEGS) was subsequently entrusted with overseeing the project and supervising its planning, preparation, and implementation, transforming the vision of the University into a reality that serves the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states. As part of this milestone, the foundation stone for the University's campus in Sakhir was laid on 1 May 1984 (30 Rajab 1404 AH) under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Amir of the State of Bahrain, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the University's journey toward academic and scientific excellence.
